By force, that is... the whole truth about telescopic actuators

Telescopic actuators

Telescopic cylinders are a special variety of hydraulic cylinders. They are designed to carry heavy loads. They are used where the standard working stroke of a hydraulic cylinder is unable to perform a specific task. Learn more!

What are telescopic actuators?

Telescopic cylinders are design solutions that allow increasing the stroke range when the whole cylinder is working. The range of the working stroke can be up to a dozen meters. This is made possible by a characteristic design: the extension of the actuator depends on the number and length of the sleeves. This design allows you to lift even heavy weights. One can distinguish between actuators with both single and double-sided movement. It is possible to select them according to one’s needs – thus machines with hydraulic systems are able to work more safely and efficiently.

Construction of telescopic actuators

Telescopic actuators have a specific design, so that there is a big difference between their minimum and maximum length. After all, their telescopic design consists of several sections of increasingly smaller diameter. When oil is applied, the actuator slides out, with the bushing with the largest diameter sliding out at first, and then the bushing with an increasingly smaller diameter. The whole thing, in turn, is assembled in reverse: from the sleeve from the smallest diameter to larger and larger.

By far the most popular are single-acting actuators, whose design is relatively simple. Their ejection occurs under the influence of an external oil stream and they are only able to work in one direction. Double-acting actuators, on the other hand, can operate in two directions under load.

Application of telescopic actuators

Telescopic cylinders are used in agricultural, mining, industrial and aerospace machinery, as well as in transportation itself. They are also used in forestry, horticulture and construction. When it comes to agricultural machinery itself, telescopic cylinders are most often used in various types of trailers.

Damage to the telescopic actuator

Damage to the telescopic actuator is most often caused by sand – it should not be in the bushings in the first place. Otherwise, longitudinal cracks may appear on individual sections. What’s more, the actuators also need to be protected by a limit valve – otherwise, when fully extended, if oil pressure is still operating, the actuator sleeve may deform and simply “swell”. Not all farmers know about this, and it is very important.
